Now that identity theft is becoming an epidemic, a centralized data system of identification is actually going to be an effective resolution. Why? Because from birth, you will be able to track a person’s identification and it can’t be faked or copied because it will contain your own private characteristics.
Despite all the news happening in our country now, one of the brighter things is that the government is planning a centralized data source for the identification of the citizens through the ID. One of his economic managers said that the government is actually rooting for a national ID system in President Duterte’s term to somehow help ease the delivery of social services. So, Filipinos won’t have a very difficult time in getting proper identification documents since this will replace almost everything that we’ve grown with.
Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said that this national ID will replace all government-issued cards; except the drivers’ license and passports. It’s not going to be a normal ID as it will contain biometric data; will be issued at birth; and it is renewable when the citizen turns 18.
An executive order is being drafted for the national ID, which will be issued to all 105 million Filipinos “within two years of the enactment of the proposal,” he said.
“We intend to give all Filipinos a national id that will also function as a social welfare card,” Diokno mentioned in a tax forum.
The biometrics will be able to distinguish the specific person or the identity of the ID’s owner, the EMV or the chip-based technology will distinguish who can avail of discounts on the following:
- Retail
- Medicine and health services
- Transportation

May it be student, company-related, or senior citizen, it’s going to be a big help because people would be able to know what discounts you may have.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking; that this might be another “plan” that will never happen. To let you know, a committee of the House of Representatives approved a bill that sought to combine government-issued IDs into a single ID. This bill was approved last month.
Before Duterte’s term, former President’s weren’t able to push through with this plan OR they weren’t able to even map it out. Now, they’ve put in mind the security of each person’s identity and came up with a plan like this.
