TIP 1. SEAL

Check if the box of the laptop is sealed. This is a good way of verifiying if the laptop is brand new and if it really came from the manufacturer.

TIP 2. POWER ON

“Why does the laptop takes too long to open?” That’s simply because when you switch on a brand new laptop, it will not automatically power up since its battery is uncharged. Plug in the charger to test if it’s working and in order for the laptop to power on.

TIP 3. PHYSICAL CONDITION

Examine if the laptop has dents, scratches or fingerprints as well as the stickers at its front and back. You might want to compare its stickers to the indicated and specified description or specs to the box. Though not all laptops have stickers on them, for intance HP and Lenovo.

TIP 4. SET-UP

A brand new laptop will take about 1 to 3 minutes to power on. First, set the country. We suggest to skip connecting to a WiFi for the moment because the laptop might automatically update. You can just set it up later on if you want to save some time.

TIP 5. FREEBIES

This is optional. But you may also check the laptop’s freebies for any physical damages while waiting for it to load up such as mouse or USB so they can replace them in case they have some defects.

TIP 6. SPECS

Go to Diagnostic Tools. Click Windows Key+R then type “dxdiag.”

TIP 7. WINDOWS ACTIVATION

Check if the windows are activated or licensed. Typed “Activation Settings.” in the start-up menu. Do not falter if the windows are not licensed because most Windows use digital license which automatically update its status when connected to a WiFi.

TIP 8. WIFI CAPABILTY

What’s the use of your laptop if you can’t connect to the internet, yes? Check if the WiFi is properly working just incase there is a factory defect in the WiFi’s module.

TIP 9. AUDIO OR BROWSING CAPABILTY

If you are a movie or series maniac, open any videos from YouTube to test its audio. This is a vital component of your laptop especially if you are a freelancer and you need to connect with your clients.

TIP 10. FUNCTION KEYS

You may use the NotePad and type “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” since it composed all the alphabets to check if its keyboard keys are working.

TIP 11.CAMERA

Type “Camera” in the start-up menu to check if it’s working properly.

TIP 12. USB PORTS

All of the ports should be working fine. Try plugging in the mouse or the charger to see if the ports are all alright.

TIP 13. SERIAL NUMBERS

The laptop’s serial numers on the box and receipt should match. When at least one letter doesn’t match and your laptop has factory defects, you can’t get a warranty. To check, search “CMD” on the start-up menu. Then type “wmic bios get serialnumber” and enter it. The serial numbers will appear on the screen.

TIP 14. STORAGE

To know if the declared storage information matches with the seller’s. Note that if the indicated storage is for instance 1 Terabyte, it does not neccessarily corresponds to 1000 Gigabytes, it could be more or less.

TIP 15. WARRANTY

Warranty serves as your security. Usually, stores offer 1 year warranty and 7 days replacement which covers any factory defects but not in the form of accidents. They also offer manufaturer’s warranty or brand’s warranty. All you have to do is bring the laptop to an authorized service center and present your receipt.
